Black History & Culture in Dance

Tonight was the night of my first dance event for my dance club, the Pioneer Dancers. In the spirit of Black History Month, I had guest choreographer Korie Genius who teaches Dancehall in New York City.

I created this event to introduce different styles of dance to my club members and the entire William Paterson University. Dance isn’t highlighted as much as it deserves to be and so I wanted to highlight dancers within the tri-state area to share their talents.

It was such a great event, connecting with the music, the movements and enjoying the vibe of it all.

Sharing dancehall was so important to Korie because of its roots from Jamaica. It was an honor having him since he's one of the only choreographers in the area to teach it.

Being able to learn and dance with well-established choreographers was a great way to de-stress and share my love for dance with others. Seeing how much joy it brought Korie to teach and the engagements of everyone to dance was the highlight of the event. I’ve never met someone so genuine and passionate about teaching.

Today reminded me again why I love to dance so much and appreciate its community.

I will definitely be taking more dance classes in the future to expand my reach in dance. As I continue my dance journey and get outside my comfort zone, I encourage you all to do the same, whether it's dance-related or not!
